According to the National Headache Foundation, more than 29.5 Americans suffer from migraine headaches annually. Women are three times more likely to be affected than men and migraines are most commonly experienced between the ages of 15 and 55. Shockingly, nearly half of all migraine sufferers have received a misdiagnosis from their healthcare provider. Migraine is often diagnosed as sinus headache or tension-type headache.

Because many factors trigger migraine attacks, it is often difficult to properly treat migraine sufferers. However, tracking migraines and uncovering specific migraine triggers can make it easier for the patient to receive proper care. Ubiqi Health has developed a mobile application for migraine sufferers to aid in this process. In addition to tracking their migraines, users can generate reports online (with the data collected on the mobile application) to print and share with their doctors.

For more information on Ubiqi Health and its Migraine Tracker please see the slide deck below.

Key Activities:

As of November 2011, Ubiqi’s Migraine Tracker has been on the market for less than a year and already has over 3,000 active users. With over 8,000 downloads of the mobile application, Ubiqi has been tracking common triggers and treatments of migraine sufferers. The app does not push educational content to users; instead it tracks data for sufferers of migraines measuring their frequency and severity. In addition, the application determines whether there are correlations between triggers or treatments and migraines. Migraine sufferers can than take the data to their physicians and discuss lifestyle changes, medications, or other treatment strategies.

The mobile application and online tools are available to individuals across the globe. According to Ubiqi, the app is most commonly used by individuals between 31-40 years old. 55% of the users are from the United States, and 65% are female.

To learn more about this mobile health innovation, please see the summary embedded below.

Results:

Ubiqi Health’s Migraine Tracker has 3,000 active users who are currently tracking their migraines using the mobile application. Of those active users 39% have made at least 5 entries and 23% have made at least 10 entries. 4% of the active users are considered to be ‘super users’ in that they have made more than 40 entries since they began using the app.

Below is data Ubiqi Health has gathered from active users based on what is triggering migraines, what treatment the users sought to alleviate migraine pain and specific medications the active users relied on. These data are being used to improve the platform and determine educational content that will be delivered to application users in the future.

Key Migraine Triggers:

Ubiqi Health is currently tracking over 200 different triggers. Over a quarter of these triggers are related to diet. Ubiqi has noticed that a quarter of triggers people are citing can be easily avoided. This indicates that raising awareness of common triggers among application users could reduce medication usage and improve quality of life. Common triggers include:

• Diet
• Stress
• Weather changes
• Changes in sleep patterns

Top 5 Treatments Ubiqi Health users sought:

• Abortive Medication
• Inactivity
• Darkness

Top cited medications:

• Imitrex (11%)
• Excedrin (7%)
• Maxalt (7%)
• Relpax (6%)
• Tylenol (6%)

Ubiqi is currently gathering quantitative and qualitative data on how users are benefiting from the application. In the interim, user testimonials indicate that migraine sufferers are benefiting from the tool. Sample user comments appear below.

  • Laura: I use the iPhone app. I can’t imagine migraine life without it. The app lets me figure out a pattern and is helping me learn how to manage my migraine. It’s a great tool!
  • Stephanie: My doctor is all for the tool. Standardized pain charts were suggested – both for patient-to-patient and attack-to-attack continuity of ratings. Also, this is a way to monitor/flag potential triggers and treatments so they can be seen at a glance.
  • B.P.: This is actually a really compelling differentiator for you guys, the ability to try to figure out what the patterns are…my doctor loves the little printed out charts.
  • Shantel: I noticed from my Ubiqi reports that certain foods triggered my migraines… then changed my diet.
  • L.A. (via Twitter): Doc was super impressed with the app… we were able to change my whole approach to treatment based on migraine pattern thanks to the app. Thank you!

As the mobile application gains more traction among migraine suffers Ubiqi Health will continue to gather data on common trigger points, what treatments are most often sought and the most commonly used medications. This information may be used to develop or inform future migraine-related educational content.
