On June 7, 2010, Morgan Stanley released an update of the widely cited Internet trends research outlined below.  In its presentation the firm focused on:

  • The global competition between Chinese and U.S.-based social networks, (Tencent, Facebook)
  • What the rapid adoption of the iPad means for the mobile Web and smartphone market
  • How the U.S., long a laggard behind Japan in high-speed mobile Internet use, has more 3G users than Japan
  • What Yahoo!'s home page reinvention has done for its traffic -- and ability to target specific users

In April 2010, Morgan Stanley released an analysis of global Internet trends, focusing on how major countries such as the United States, Japan and China are using the PC and mobile-based Web.  Key findings from this analysis include:

  • Globally, there are 1.8 billion Internet users.  China has more Internet users than the U.S.
  • Mobile Internet growth is suprassing the PCs; Apple devices are driving growth of mobile Web
  • Within 5 years, more people will be accessing the Web via mobile devices than laptops
  • Social network-based communication are surpassing e-mail
  • Many more people are accessing their content "from the cloud" i.e.,online rather than on their desktop PCs
  • The empahsis with shift from content creation to consumption in the next Web cycle
  • Social networks are becoming information, connection and marketing hubs, yet health brands are largely absent
