Tercica Inc Launches Niche Online Community for Acromegaly Patients

With larger pharmaceutical companies leery of launching fully interactive social media sites, smaller drug firms serving niche audiences have been more aggressive.  In mid-2009, Tercica Inc. lauched Acromegaly Answers, a patient support program for Acromegaly patients.  Acromegaly, or gigantism impacts only 3-4 per million people annually.  The Tercica site is "branded" meaning that information about a prescription medication, Somatuline Depot, is on the site.

Acromegaly Answers launched in mid-2009, so information about its impact on the acromegaly community is unknown.  However, observers from the pharmaceutical marketing community have been quick to praise the effort.  However, others, such as John Mack, author of the Pharma Marketing Blog, have wondered whether the site will pass muster with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
